Established in 1973, KRISO has contributed to the development of Korea’s ship and ocean engineering industry through extensive research on ships and offshore plants. As the only government-funded research institute in the field of ships and offshore plants (under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries), KRISO resolves national issues by developing, applying, and commercializing novel technology in related fields such as design, safety, and environment. It was established for the purpose of conducting creative research while setting international standards.

To this end, KRISO is conducting research in various areas. It has strengthened national competitiveness by developing eco-friendly, high-efficiency shipbuilding technology, and promoted innovative growth through advanced offshore plant technology. In addition, it prepared the country for the fourth industrial revolution by embracing digital convergence and innovation, and developed maritime accident response technology to ensure a safer ocean environment for all.
